A highlight of high school is getting to dress up and celebrate with all your friends at prom! Prom day is full of fun - from hair and make up, to pictures, to dinner, to prom parades, and finally the main event, prom. Girls across America spend weeks and even months searching for the perfect dress, hair style, make up inspiration, nail salon, accessories, and shoes.
Let's be real though, it's really all about the dress. With all the pressure of finding the perfect dress prom dress shopping can feel like a marathon event. During all the hustle and bustle of pulling dresses, waiting for a dressing room, finding a helper to zip you up, trying on heels, fighting lines, pull limits, testing jewelry ideas, and straight up store craziness, finding the perfect prom dress can be stressful.
After years of shopping in formal stores for proms, pageants, and everything in between, I've figured out all the things that can make dress shopping less stressful for everyone. I've been following the trends for 2019 and I have a good idea about what will be the most popular designs, styles, brands, and fabrics this season.
Here's my 2019 prom predictions
- I expect to see lots of sparkle this year, almost every designer has produced dresses out of a fabric that has sparkle intertwined in every thread. While sparkling embellishments have always been popular, this new fabric takes it too a whole new level. Every inch of these sparkling dresses in every size and style will be at high schools everywhere this spring.
- On the trend of simple lines, lots of designers are creating dresses without all the glitter and glam. Using a comfy and moveable jersey and satin fabrics these dresses are becoming a new classic because of the pure elegance of these formals. Featuring fabulous shapes and necklines, these simple dresses are nothing short of classic.
- Bohemian Babes, I didn't expect this trend, but I don't hate it. Sherri Hill has in the past created simple, more casual dresses that scream bohemian chic and fancy southern elements and for 2019 she's pulled out a whole line of them. So if you wanna change it up and go for a softer, natural, and easy look, go bohemian.
Ways to KILL prom shopping:
- Don't go on a Saturday if at all possible. Saturdays are the craziest day of prom dress shopping so avoid it.
- Rub some self tanner on the night before! Everyone feels more confident when they are tan and it makes every color dress look better. Plus, if you plan on tanning for prom then you should shop tanned too.
- Bring a pair of heels similar to what you would wear at prom. Its easier to visualize what the dress would look like if you have heels on and you never know what crazy pair the store may pull out for you to try on at the last second.
- Wear a real bra, please no sports bras.
- Bring a pony tail so you can test up or down hairstyles.
- Wear an outfit you can pull on and off easy!
& finally
- Try on dresses you don't like on the hanger. Sometimes it doesn't speak to you on the rack, but that doesn't mean it won't be fabulous on your body.
May the prom shopping odds be ever in your favor.

Brooke <3
